Signage

Signage is required to adequately aid motorists to follow the Route Numbering systems, find destinations, along with informing of travel distances. This is needed when the road network is huge; covering thousands kilometres of roads across the state of Victoria. It is fair to say that Victoria's system is generally well-signed, and is easy to navigate using signs alone. Since the 1950's, many types of signs have produced, each unique in design and purpose. As the years go by, the design of signs and the implementation has changed dramatically, in favour of motorists.

Route Numbering

Victoria's current system consists of six main types of route numbering - Metropolitan Routes in metropolitan areas; Statewide Route Numbering Scheme in the regional areas; Tourist Routes for tourist regions; and Over-Dimension Routes for larger vehicles in metropolitan areas of Melbourne and Geelong. The fifth system, National Highways, has been incorporated into the Statewide Route Numbering Scheme where a modified shield holds the letter prefix; while in metropolitan area, the original numbering is left unchanged. Finally, the sixth system, National Routes, which now only exist in the Metropolitan Area - their regional counterparts have been reclassified under the Statewide Route Numbering Scheme.

  Freeways

Victoria has an extensive freeway network considering the size and population density of the state. The majority of the freeways lie in the metropolitan area, with regional freeways stretching as long fingers from Melbourne to provincial centres. A freeway in Victoria is roadway which has been classified by Vicroads with a classification number between 1000 and 1999. Freeways are generally controlled access, dual carriageways with grade separated interchanges; but this can vary from freeway to freeway, metropolitan to regional.
