Freeway Route F90 was first introduced onto the Calder Freeway in 1972 when the first section of the freeway was opened between the Tullamarine Freeway and Keilor Road, Niddrie. It was progressively extended to Erebus Street in 1974; to Green Gully Road in 1982; and finally to Sunshine Avenue in 1984. F90 duplexed with National Route 79 for its entire distance between Niddrie and Keilor.

The destination associated for F90 westbound was Keilor, while Bendigo was associated with National Route 79.

On March 10 1987, F90 was decommissioned and replaced by Metropolitan Route 40 between the Tullamarine Freeway and Green Gully Road (then known as St Albans Road). Remnants of F90 still remained on side roads up until 1998, only removed when M79 was introduced onto the Calder Freeway and the signs were replaced.
