Freeway Route F80 was first introduced onto the South Eastern Freeway between Batman Avenue and Toorak Road in May 1970, following the opening of the Burnley – Toorak section. Prior to 1970, the section of the South Eastern Freeway between Batman Avenue and Barkly Avenue was allocated Metropolitan Route 80.

F80 was formally decommissioned in 1987; however it was not until 1988 when National Route 1 shields began replacing F80 shields on signs when the South Eastern to Mulgrave Arterial Road Link opened (connecting the Mulgrave Freeway to the South Eastern Freeway).
