Alternative State Route 153 (ALT SR153) was introduced in 1986 as the only alternative route in the entire State Route Numbering System. ALT SR153 followed the eastern leg the Maroondah Highway and southern leg of the Midland Highway providing a loop route to and from State Route 153 into Mansfield. ALT SR153 connected to SR164 Mount Buller Road, thus forming part of the route between Melbourne and Mount Buller.

Both the Maroondah Highway and Midland Highway are two-lane single carriageway.

In 1998, the Maroondah Highway portion of route was replaced by B320, while the Midland Highway portion was replaced by C518 in the Statewide Route Numbering Scheme.
