Lifespan

1990 - 1998

State Route 188 was introduced in December 1990 to coincide with the proclamation of the Hyland Highway as a State Highway [1]. SR188 followed the entire length of the Hyland Highway, providing a link between the Latrobe Valley and the Bass Strait coast at Yarram.

Hyland Highway is two-lane single carriageway, with windy sections as it passes through the eastern edge of the Strzelecki Ranges between Flynns Creek and Wonwron.

In 1998, the entire route was replaced by C482 in the Statewide Route Numbering Scheme.

Though not occurring during SR188's lifespan, the original Hyland Highway between Traralgon and Flynns Creek was closed in November 2003[2] as a result of the expansion of the Loy Yang open cut mine. The Hyland Highway was deviated west and south of the mine via Traralgon Creek Road and Bartons Lane.
